The valley's seasons do not ease into each other; they flip. One week in October you are still running the swamp cooler at noon, and two weeks later there is frost on the windshield in Bodfish and the smell of woodsmoke over Wofford Heights. A lot of homes up here heat with wood, fully or partly, and the difference between a cozy winter and a stressful one is mostly what you do in September while the weather is still friendly.
Here is the fall checklist we work through with neighbors at Lake Isabella True Value, 6050 Lake Isabella Blvd.
A season of wood fires leaves creosote in the flue, and creosote is how chimney fires start. Before the first fire of the year, the flue needs to be inspected and cleaned. You can absolutely do it yourself on a single-story house with a straight flue: a wire chimney brush matched to your flue size and diameter (we stock 6-inch and 8-inch rounds and square brushes for masonry flues), extension rods, a drop cloth, and a shop vac.
Between cleanings, a creosote sweeping log or Creosote Buster firelog helps loosen deposits so they shed instead of glazing. Be clear on what those are: maintenance between cleanings, not a substitute for one.
While you are up there, check the spark arrestor on top of the flue. In a valley that takes fire season as seriously as ours, the screen on your chimney cap is not optional equipment.
Pull the bottom section of your stove pipe and look at it. Rust-through, heavy scale, or seams opening up mean replacement, and stove pipe is exactly the kind of thing that is cheap and in stock in September and urgently needed during the first cold snap. We carry single-wall DuraBlack stove pipe kits, telescoping double-wall sections, and pellet stove vent pipe in common sizes. Bring the old section in; matching diameter and type in person beats guessing every time.
September firewood is cheaper and drier than December firewood; that is just how the valley market works. Whatever you burn (and locals burn everything from valley oak to pine from up the mountain), it should be seasoned a year and stored off the ground, out of the rain, and, remember fire season, at least 30 feet from the house.
For processing your own: the Fiskars 36-inch Super Splitting Axe has converted a lot of maul loyalists, though the 8-pound Collins maul is still the tool for gnarly oak rounds. Store the split wood on a steel log rack so air moves under it, and a canvas log tote saves your floors and your back on the nightly carry.
Every home that burns wood needs two things checked each fall, no exceptions:
Add a cast iron grate and a spark screen for open fireplaces, and the hearth is ready.
Valley freezes arrive on a forecast, but the sell-out at the store happens the morning after the first one. Beat the rush:
Everything above is in stock right now at Lake Isabella True Value, 6050 Lake Isabella Blvd, and you can check availability at lakeisabella.shoptruevalue.com. Bring photos of your stove setup, your flue's measurements, or the crusty old pipe section itself, and we will get you matched and out the door. The first cold night in the valley is always closer than August makes it feel.
