By August, every conversation in the valley eventually arrives at the same two subjects: the heat, and what the heat is doing to the electric bill. When it is 102 for the third week running, the cooler or AC runs from noon to midnight, and Southern California Edison sends you a number that ruins your morning coffee.
Here is the honest news: the cheapest cooling in any house is the heat you keep out in the first place. Most Kern River Valley homes (and especially the older cabins and manufactured homes around the lake) leak heat in through the same handful of weak points, and the fixes are cheap, fast, and on our shelves at Lake Isabella True Value.
A single-pane window in direct afternoon sun is basically a space heater you cannot turn off. The west- and south-facing glass on your house is where the fight is won.
Weatherstripping gets sold as a winter product, but air leaks work both directions: your cooled air pours out of the same gaps the winter drafts come in through. Walk the house on a hot afternoon and feel around doors, windows, and the swamp cooler duct.
Air that is moving feels six to eight degrees cooler than air that is standing still, which means fans let you run the cooler less without anyone complaining.
If the house still cannot hold temperature, the next tier is attic insulation, a cooler upgrade sized correctly for your square footage, and shading the cooler itself. Those are bigger conversations, and we are happy to have them at the counter with your square footage and a photo or two.
Every item in this post is in stock at Lake Isabella True Value, 6050 Lake Isabella Blvd, and you can check stock anytime at lakeisabella.shoptruevalue.com. Come in with your worst window or your last electric bill, and we will help you pick the fix that pays for itself first. Stay cool out there; October is coming, eventually.
